I tried to dig it up to move it, but I broke the root, so I put the plant in water in the kitchen to see if the root would grow. A few days later, I found a tiny caterpillar on a leaf. Since then, I've raised them in the backyard every summer--except last year, when I found only 3 caterpillars & gave them to our librarian to display. The milkweed in the yard keeps spreading, so I have a decent supply. I've also had good luck starting milkweed plants in pots from seeds I collect in the fall & refrigerate over the winter.
