First Books Donation Update

Help the Teaching Authors make a Holiday Donation to First Book by posting a comment on our blog. For every comment we receive from now through December 31, 2011 (one per person, please, and spam doesn’t count), we’ll donate $1 to First Book. We’ll count comments from now through the end of the year, we'll post periodic updates, and we’ll donate up to $225. Every $2.50 donated provides a brand-new book to a child in need. And through Dec. 31, Disney Publishing Worldwide will match every $1 donated with another new book.

As of this moment (8:30 a.m. Monday), counting one comment each from two Teaching Authors and one from my cousin who tried to post but couldn't (thanks, Maureen!), we're up to 33 comments so far. At $1/comment, that means a $33 donation to First Book--a good start but still a good distance from our maximum donation of $225.

At $2.50/book, our donation so far equals 13.2 books plus 33 more from Disney Publishing Worldwide for a total of 46.2 books. A $225 donation would mean 90 books for children who need them plus 225 more from Disney Publishing Worldwide. Let's try to send 315 books to children in need! Please add your own comment if you haven't yet, help us spread the word, and encourage your friends to comment, too!

  18. What a wonderful way of spreading reading love. I always ask my college students to write about an early book, and there are few sweeter papers to read. Some go on and on about the wonders of parents reading to them. Some wish their parents had, and revel in being able to read books they missed when young now that they're in college. Clearly, it makes a difference in lives. Thanks for helping that happen.

  22. The first book I remember buying for my not yet born baby was Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmun. It was chews on, laughed on, spit up on and still holds a special place in our hearts and on our bookshelves.

  26. This is a great idea! I can remember one of my first books was a big book of different fairy tales. My grandma would read to me every night before bed. My favorites were Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and The Gingerbread Man. Grandma told me these stories so often that she could recite them to me by heart. Grandma telling me stories is my favorite memory of childhood.

  27. I remember being ill in 1942 and getting a book ( which is now banned) called Little Black Sambo; it had gentle stories about his life in a jungle environment and I loved it. When asked what I wanted to do as I grew up, I said,"I want to go to Africa n help people."
I did not get there but I do have a child through Compassion. Books can be a good influence and leave a lasting impression. I also loved Babar books.

  28. I was fortunate to have parents who bought us Golden books and older cousins whose family bought expensive cloth and leather bound books, like The Wizard of Oz (I watercolored the black and white illustrations). I had so many more books than the kids on our block of 32 identical three bedroom and one bath houses that we started a lending library.

  35. First books bring a lasting impact.
Some of my favorite first books were

THE BIG BOOK of CATS by Gladys Emerson cook

THE GOLDEN ENCYCLOPEDIA by Dorothy A. Bennett,
    illustrated by Cornelius De Witt

and a very early edition from my step-grandmother of
OZMA of OZ, which I kept close by so I could color in it.

The originals of the OZMA and CATs are by my side as I type this, retrieved from their places in our home & the copy of the GOLDEN, which I bought at a collectible shop is here with me also. I Love the memory of my first books.

    Brava for this concept TA!

(I've been in my cave of Thesis again & not much commenting - hope I make the deadline!)
